Chapter 17: Silver

Lorcan's POV

I carried Dane Kelleher up the farmhouse steps with his blood running down my arm.

He weighed more than I did, and he was talking the whole way.

"Put me down. It's a scratch. Tell my sister it's a scratch."

"Shut up, Dane."

"You're not my Alpha."

"I'm not anybody's."

Molly was in the doorway with her cardigan soaked to the elbows.

She took one look at the cut under his ribs and went white.

"Silver," she said. "The edge of that blade was silver. He's been carrying it for an hour."

"He didn't say."

"He's an idiot. Table. Now."

They cleared the long kitchen table in one sweep.

I laid him on it, and Corinna came through the door still pulling a flannel shirt over her head.

I saw her see him, and I saw her go into the clinic voice, level and quick.

"Molly, the green bottle. Lorcan, you hold his shoulders."

"Corinna."

"Hold him."

I took his shoulders.

The silver was lodged against a rib.

The only way to get it out was to cut in after it.

He had to stay awake enough to keep his wolf down.

He bucked once.

Corinna put her blade in, and the fragment came up between her forceps, bright and dirty.

It touched my wrist as she lifted it out.

I felt the skin go.

I didn't let go of him.

It burned down to the bone, and I stared at the wall and held on until she dropped the piece into a dish.

"Done," she said. "Molly, pack it."

"You're burned," Molly told me.

"It's nothing."

"I know what it is." She was already reaching for a salve.
