Chapter 20: The Safe
I went downstairs.
Of course I went downstairs.
I took the baseball bat from behind my bedroom door and went down the back stairs in my sleep shirt and a pair of Marva's old bowling socks.
The fire door at the bottom was shut.
Through it I could hear the bar's ice machine humming, same as always.
I opened it an inch.
Nothing moved.
The back door to the alley stood wide open, letting in cold air and the smell of the dumpster.
The lock was hanging off the frame by one screw.
I didn't need to look in Marva's office.
I looked anyway.
The coat rack was knocked over. Her raincoat lay on the floor.
The green safe was still under it, its door standing open.
There was a neat round hole drilled through the steel right beside the dial.
Beside the seven, the one that always sticks.
Marva came in the back door with her car keys in her fist at 3:21, in a housecoat and sneakers.
She stopped when she saw me.
"I told you not to come down."
"I know."
"You never listen."
"I know."
