"The network will want you both on the morning shows," the producer said. "I've said no to all of them until Monday."
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't." She took an envelope out of her sweater pocket. "I believe you need this before midnight."
It was a letter on the show's letterhead.
Signed by her and by two lawyers, timed at 7:12 p.m.
The sum of one million dollars is owed to Tilda Dolan.
"Go," she said. "And Ms. Dolan. I meant it, about liking you."
Gannon drove.
He drove like he was bringing a ship in through fog, ten miles over the limit and no more.
I held the letter flat in my lap the whole way.
At 11:20 we came through the front door of the Lamplighter.
The place was so full people were standing on the booths.
The crew had beaten us there. So had every regular, the bowling league ladies, and forty strangers who'd watched the show.
They saw us and the noise went up through the pressed tin ceiling.
