Nobody on that stage said a word.
The conductor looked at his shoes.
A violinist in the second row wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.
Clarissa stroked Noah's hair and smiled at me over his head.
I stayed on my knees next to the bench.
My son wouldn't look at me.
I thought about grabbing him and walking out.
I could have done it. Nobody on that stage would have stopped me.
He would have screamed the whole way to the car.
And he would have remembered it forever.
I stood up.
"Okay, Noah," I said. "You can stay with Dad and Aunt Clarissa this week."
His head came up fast.
He looked surprised. Like he'd been ready for a fight that never came.
"One week," I said. "Then we'll talk again. You can call me any time. Day or night."
