Chapter 12: Let Me Explain
"Stay on the phone," I said. "Don't hang up. I'm coming."
I didn't stop to change.
I drove across town in my jeans and my work apron, still stained with Sunday's grease.
I ran two red lights.
Noah kept whispering the whole way.
"It's dark in here. The light switch is outside."
"I know, baby. Count for me. Count out loud."
He counted. He got to four hundred and twelve.
Clarissa's building was all glass and doormen.
The night doorman stood up when I burst in.
"Ma'am, you can't just..."
"My son is locked in a room upstairs. Call 911 or get out of my way."
He looked at my face.
He pressed the elevator button for me.
The hallway on the ninth floor was carpeted and silent.
I pounded on her door with both fists.
"Clarissa! Open this door!"
Nothing.
I pounded harder. The sound boomed down the hall.
