I didn't sleep that night either.
At six, Noah climbed into my bed with his stuffed penguin.
"Is today the court day?"
"Yes, baby."
"Do I have to talk to the judge?"
"Only if you want to."
He was quiet for a long time.
"I want to," he said.
Courtroom 4 was smaller than I expected.
Wood benches. A flag. A clock that ticked too loud.
Jonathan's parents were already sitting in the front row when I walked in.
His mother stood up and hugged me. She smelled like hairspray and lavender.
"We're right here," she whispered.
His father just nodded at me, once. That was enough.
Jonathan came in at five to ten.
He wore a plain gray suit. No tie. He looked like he hadn't slept in a week.
He sat at the other table alone.
