Chapter 18: Public
"This is a private family event," Gianna said.
Her voice came out bright and thin, and the whole room heard it crack.
"Security," she said, to no one. "Somebody please."
The man in the black jacket took one step toward me.
Maureen Foley stood up from the third table.
"Let her talk," she said.
The man stopped.
Heads turned to Maureen, who had known every guest there for thirty years.
"Maureen," Gianna whispered. "Please. Not her."
"I'm asking you for the paper, sweetheart," Maureen said. "The death certificate. The one from Florence. I never asked in five years, and I'm asking now."
"I told you. I burned everything."
"Then who wrote the line in the cemetery file?" I said.
I walked to the front.
Nobody stopped me.
I took the microphone from its stand, and the speakers popped.
"My name is Justine Kessling," I said. "Fourteen months ago, my ride to the hospital was sent to Linden Park Cemetery in Queens. My daughter died in the back seat."
"The destination was changed from inside my fiance's account."
"By the one person who had every password he owned."
Two hundred people breathed in.
I held up the folded page.
"This is a letter from a doctor in Florence, five years old, with a translation. It says Gianna Santoro was examined and was never pregnant."
"That's a forgery," Gianna said.
"Her father has the original in his briefcase."
I did not look at the head table, but I heard a chair move.
"This," I said, and lifted the three stapled pages, "is the cemetery's record of Section 9, Lot 14. Under Interments it says none recorded."
