Chapter 19: No Forgiveness

Justine's POV

It took four men and her father to get Gianna out of the Grand Room.

She stopped screaming in the corridor, and that was worse.

She walked between Mr. Santoro and a hotel manager with her head up, her white dress stained with champagne and her cheek still red.

At the elevator she turned and looked back at me.

Her face was perfectly calm.

"You'll never be happy," she said. "Not with him. Not with anyone."

"I'd rather be unhappy than be you," I said.

The doors closed on her.

Carla Santoro stayed behind.

She stood alone in the emptied corridor, a small woman in green silk, with her hoops in her fist.

"I'll say it again," she said before I spoke. "To the ride company. To the hospital. Wherever you need a Santoro to sign."

"Under oath."

"Under oath."

"And you'll put it in writing that you heard her on the phone that night."

"Yes."

"Good," I said. "That's what you owe me. It isn't forgiveness."

"I know."

She went after her husband and her daughter with her back very straight.

Behind me the Grand Room was a ruin of overturned chairs and half-eaten cake, and two hundred people who would never again believe a word Gianna said.

Clive stood at my shoulder with his hands in his pockets.

"Do you want me to drive you?" he asked.

"I want you to go to the yard."

His face did not change.

"I'm not saying forever," I said. "I'm saying tonight I want to sit with my parents and not decide anything."

"Then I'll be at the yard."

"I know where it is."

He went down the corridor, and I let him.

It was Sunday morning when Brendan came to my parents' hotel.
