Chapter 6: The Driver's Message

My mother was folding towels that were already folded when I walked into the hotel room.

She had spent the night on a terminal bench, and she was still apologizing to the bellhop.

"Sit, honey," she said. "I'll make tea."

"Mom," I said. "Sit down."

She looked at my father.

My father shut the door and leaned against it.

"I wanted to tell you months ago," Mom said. "Your father wanted to, too."

"Tell me what?"

She went to her purse and took out her phone.

She held it a long moment before she tapped the screen.

"The week after the hospital, a man called me," she said. "I was your emergency contact, you remember. He left a message."

"He was the driver, Justine. The one from that night."

I did not move.

"The doctor said you were too fragile," she said. "Brendan said to leave it. He said you'd blame yourself. He said it would only make it worse, and that he'd handle it."

"We believed him, Justine."

"Play it," I said.

My mother pressed the screen and set the phone on the bed between us.

There was a rattle, a car door, a man breathing hard.

"Hello, ma'am. This is the driver from the ride on Tuesday night," he said. "I got your number off the passenger's emergency card. I'm sorry to bother you."

"I don't know if she can hear me. I want her to know I didn't take her to that place on purpose."

His voice shook.

"We were three minutes from the hospital. I was doing everything right. Then my screen changed."
