Chapter 10: What He Wrote
Preston held the phone steady and let it run.
"Breaking and entering," he said, to the camera and to me. "Third floor, my room. Rory Beckett, ladies and gentlemen."
"I didn't break anything," I said.
"You've got my jacket."
"It's my jacket."
"Is it?" He tilted the phone down to the green sleeve in my arms. "Funny. I'm the one who posted a photo of it. I'm the one who found it. I'm the one who's kept it safe." He smiled. "Hand it over, Rory, or I'll make this a police report."
"Delete the video," Ben said.
He had stepped out of the closet behind me.
Preston's smile widened.
"There he is. Ben, my man. Did you let her in?"
"I did."
"With your key?"
"Delete it."
"I think I'll keep it." Preston looked from him to me, and back again. "It'd be a shame if somebody had to call the venue manager about a booth tech who lets people into private rooms."
Ben said nothing.
"That's what I thought." Preston put out his hand. "The jacket."
I did not want to give it to him.
I wanted to run down the stairs with it and out into the street.
But I could see the phone, and the red light, and I could see Brooks behind Preston, staring at the carpet.
I held the jacket out.
Preston took it, folded it over his arm, and gave me a pitying little shrug.
"You're a nice girl," he said. "Don't come back. Next time I won't be this polite."
He walked into his room and shut the door.
Brooks lingered in the hall.
He glanced at Ben, and then at me, and I saw something pass over his face that was not a smirk.
