Chapter 17: Raking Light
Every head at the table turned to Francesca.
The notary kept his finger pointed at her a moment longer, then lowered it.
"With your own eyes," Francesca said.
"Yes."
"What was I wearing?"
He looked down at his register.
"A blue coat," he said. "You sat in the chair by my window. You used my pen."
"I've never owned a blue coat."
"It was three years ago, miss. People change their coats."
A few of the elders nodded.
Claudia lowered herself into a chair at the end of the table, one hand on her stomach, and nobody told her to get up.
Francesca opened her bag.
She took out a small black work lamp, the kind she clipped to her easel at the atelier.
She set it flat on the green felt beside the paper in its plastic sleeve.
"May I take it out of the sleeve?" she asked the port captain.
"Go ahead."
She slid the page out and laid it flat.
"Could someone turn off the lights?"
Nobody moved.
Then the Quincy captain pushed back his chair, walked to the wall and flicked the switch.
The room went dark, except for the streetlight in the window and the red glow of a cigar.
