Chapter 20: The Night He Drove
The port captain set the phone down on the low table.
Nobody said anything for a moment.
"Two years," Francesca said.
"I found the deleted manifests the first month I ran Freight." Michael's voice was flat. "Then I found whose login did it."
"And you let her sit at Papa's table. You let her wear your ring."
"A login proves she typed. It doesn't prove who stood behind her chair." He looked at the port captain.
"If I'd said her name, the man behind her chair would have said she did it alone. And he'd have stood up at the table and cried for her."
The port captain didn't argue.
He closed the ledger and laid his big hand on top of it.
"This stays with me," he said. "Nobody touches it until Nino can talk."
Francesca stood up.
"Where are you going?" Michael said.
She didn't answer him.
She rented a small gray car at the airport that afternoon, with her own card, and drove it to Milton.
