Chapter 22: The Cookie Tin

"I'm coming," Francesca said. "Tell him I'm coming."

Michael had already turned toward his car.

"I'll drive you."

"I'll follow you."

She drove behind his taillights all the way to the hospital.

The eleventh floor was quieter than it had been at dawn.

Michael's man was still outside Nino's door.

The chair by the elevators was empty.

Nino was propped up on two pillows with the tube out of his mouth.

His voice was almost nothing, but his eyes found her the moment she came in, and they were clear.

"Miss Francesca."

She took his hand.

The doctor had stopped Michael at the nurses' station, and through the glass she could see him listening, his head bent.

Nino pulled at her hand until she leaned down close.

"Not Michael," he breathed. "Just you."

"Nino, what tin?"

"Your father gave it to me. The week before." He swallowed, and it hurt him.

"He said, if anything happens, give it to the table. I didn't. I was scared. Three years I was scared."

"Where is it?"

"Garage. Under the workbench. Behind the paint." His eyes went to the plastic bag on the chair. "Keys."
