Chapter 28: The Wreck
The port captain stood up so fast his chair hit the paneling.
"Benedetto fed every man at this table," he said. "And you bar his daughter from his own Feast."
"The Feast belongs to the elders," the eldest said again.
"Then the elders can eat alone."
"Sit down, my friend," Ottavio said. "You're seventy-four. It's bad for your heart."
"Keep my seat warm," Francesca told the port captain from the step.
She went down the narrow stairs.
The restaurant was nearly empty on a Sunday night.
Michael was sitting alone at the bar with a glass of water he hadn't touched.
"I'm driving you," he said.
"I have a car."
"You have a gray rental parked on Fleet Street." He stood up. "One of my men has been on it all day. Twenty minutes ago a man in a hooded jacket spent six minutes under it."
"My man waited till he left and went under with a light." Michael held out his hand for her keys. "The line's been cut most of the way. Same as your father's. Same as Nino's."
She looked at his open hand.
The skin across the scarred knuckles had healed into a pink crust.
