Chapter 15: The Witness
Elias read the text twice and put the phone face down on his chest.
"Go," Margot said.
She was sitting up in the sheet with her hair in her eyes, and she had read it over his shoulder.
"It says come alone. It says not you."
"Then don't tell me where you're sitting. Tell me which car you took." She tugged the sheet up. "Bridget and I will be on Wacker in the van with the Maddox's logo. She's already offered to key something."
He looked at her.
He had spent three years deciding what kind of woman Margot Ellery was, and every one of those guesses had been wrong.
"You're not afraid of her."
"I'm afraid of how nice she'll be. Go."
The Hyatt bar on Wacker was dim, and almost empty at nine.
Claire sat in the back booth with a glass of club soda and no blazer.
Her auburn hair was tied back, her hands were bare, and she had put her phone on the table beside the glass, screen up.
Elias sat across from her and did not take off his coat.
"You asked for me."
"I asked for the one person Otto can't buy." She smiled, small and tired. "Do you want a coffee? Black, I think. Two sugars when you think nobody's looking."
It was exactly right, and he disliked her for it.
"Say what you came to say."
"Otto thinks I'm in the lobby of the Drake, trying to get Margot's attention." She slid a folded page across the table. "I'd like to be a different kind of witness."
He opened it.
It was a bank statement, one account, several pages stapled, and the name at the top was Claire Vanderlyn.
