Chapter 16: Twenty Cents
Noel walked the length of the hall with the invoice in his hand.
Fletcher was unfolding the last chair.
He felt Noel coming before he turned around.
Noel felt him feel it, which was a new and very annoying thing to know.
Noel held the invoice up.
"Ship monthly until told to stop," he read.
Fletcher set the chair down.
"You said a test without a pill is just bad news."
"I said it at three in the morning to a coffee urn."
"I was refilling the coffee urn."
"You ordered four hundred bottles from Toronto because of something I said to a coffee urn?"
"I ordered them the night you ran thirty bottles in the bay," Fletcher said. "It took a week to clear the border."
The night of the pierogies.
The night he held the bag by the top corner so their fingers wouldn't touch.
"Why hide it?" Noel said.
"Because if you knew, you'd think it was a claim." Fletcher looked at the pallets. "Or you'd pay me back. Out of a salary you don't have."
"I'd set up a payment plan."
"I know you would. That's why it was anonymous."
The woman in the Giant Eagle vest walked past them with her new bottle held against her chest.
