Chapter 21: Half Moon
Fletcher looked at his brother's hand.
He didn't take it.
"At six in the morning on September twenty-third," he said, "I was sitting on a carpet outside a supply closet on thirty-one. Noel was inside. I'll say that tomorrow. You can have the seat."
Clay's hand stayed out a second too long.
Then he put it in his coat pocket and walked out.
Then the boy with the hood started clapping, alone, too loud.
Maddie joined in.
The bond lit up in Noel's chest so bright he had to sit down, and he stayed on his stool. He wanted the furnace first.
The half moon came up over the Monongahela at seven the next night.
The iron shed was fuller than the night Fletcher knelt.
The eldest elder sat in the center chair, because the Alpha was a party.
Fletcher sat on a bench to one side.
Clay sat on the other, in his camel coat, with a lawyer.
Noel stood in the middle of the cinders under the work lights with no collar on, and he told them.
Maddie walked up the aisle and held her bottle over her head.
