Chapter 24: Sunday Dinner
Noel looked at Fletcher sitting up in the wreck of the nest, in the snow light, waiting.
Fletcher had been waiting since a closet door.
"Equal," Noel said.
"Equal."
"On the ballot."
"Side by side."
"Alphabetical," Noel said. "Arbogast goes first."
Fletcher closed his eyes, and Noel felt the laugh go through the bond before it reached his mouth.
"Yes," Fletcher said. "Arbogast goes first."
"Then yes."
The pack voted on the last night of January, in the iron shed, under a full moon.
Two names on one ballot.
The eldest elder counted the stones himself, and it took him a long time, because there were so many.
The woman in the quilted vest voted first, and loudly.
In May, the old McKees Rocks plant opened again.
Press six was gone.
In its place was a clean white lab with the windows open to the river.
Over the door hung a sign Maddie had painted, crooked.
LINE SIX. OMEGA RUN.
The woman in the Giant Eagle vest ran the press floor now.
