Chapter 7: In Front of the Pack

"I'm not going," Noel said.

"You're going," Fenella said.

"He said every omega. He's going to make some speech about me."

"Then you'll want to hear it," Maddie said. "So you can be mad about it accurately."

The Carrie Furnace stood over the Monongahela, with the long iron shed where the pack held court.

By nine there were more wolves in that shed than Noel had ever seen in one place.

Fifteen hundred, Fenella guessed. Maybe more.

They stood shoulder to shoulder on the cinders under strings of work lights.

People stepped away from Noel when he came in.

A man near the door said, "That's the one," and spat on the ground.

Fenella looked at him until he went and stood somewhere else.

They stayed at the very back, by the open doors, where the air smelled like river.

The six elders sat on folding chairs at the front.

The eldest had his cane across his knees.

Clay stood beside the chairs in a camel coat, smiling.

Fletcher walked up the center of the shed alone.

No suit. Jeans and a black sweater.

The whole shed went quiet in a wave, front to back.

"There's a rule at my company," he said. "Rule fourteen."

A murmur went through the crowd.

"My father wrote it. Two years ago, I renewed it. I put my initials on it. I didn't ask a single omega what it would do to them."

He turned in a slow circle so everyone could see his face.

"It's gone. As of tonight. It was never pack law, and it should never have been company law. Any omega in this city can apply for any job at Stavely, any floor, any lab."

"Gone," Fletcher said again.

Clay stepped forward.

"My brother doesn't have the authority. He's on leave."

"I'm not speaking as the CEO." Fletcher didn't look at him. "I'm speaking as the Alpha."
