Chapter 8: The Penthouse

I went back to the penthouse at three that afternoon, with Bennett on one side and Teagan on the other.

The doorman looked at me and looked away.

In the elevator, nobody spoke.

Before Gavin I had rented rooms in other people's apartments, and everything I owned fit in two suitcases.

That was all I wanted back.

The key worked, and for one second I felt a stupid relief.

Then I saw him sitting on the couch.

Gavin was in yesterday's shirt with the collar open.

A man in a gray suit stood at the window with a leather folder, and he was not a friend.

"Joanna," said Gavin. He got up. "Thank God. You came home."

"I came to pack."

"This is your home."

"It's Hargrove Hotels property," said Bennett from behind me. "You've lived here rent-free for four years."

Gavin ignored him.

"Baby, look at me. I've been up all night. I did a terrible thing, and I know that."

"Don't call me that."

"I'll fix it. I'll fix everything. Nobody has to know the baby wasn't..." He broke off. "Of course it's mine. I was in shock. I'll tell the papers."

"The lawyer's letter says you want a test."

"That's just paper. That's to make you listen."

The man in the gray suit shifted his weight and said nothing.

I walked past them both, down the hall, into the bedroom.

I opened the closet, took out the two suitcases and set them on the bed.
