Chapter 12: Morning Call

The cold woke me before the light did.

Soren's arm was across my waist, heavy and warm.

He was awake, and he was looking at the ceiling.

"You should hear the rest of that voicemail," he said.

"Play it."

He found the phone on the floor and put it on speaker between us on the pillow.

The lawyer had the voice of a man who billed in six-minute blocks.

"Mr. Halvorsen, my client, Mrs. Eleanor Whitstable, has become aware that you contacted Ms. Pauley on three separate occasions while she was engaged."

"We've written to your dean this morning about a recruiter who pursued a private individual."

"We are told he has since formed a personal relationship with her."

I sat up.

"This morning," I said. "Not even yesterday."

"They're fast," Soren said.

"How do they know about last night?"

"They don't. They're guessing." He rubbed his face. "They don't need it to be true."

"They need it to be a letter on the dean's desk."

"They're going after your job."

"They're going after my reference. Same thing, in a department."

I pulled the blanket up to my chin.

A week ago I would have apologized.

I would have said, I'm sorry, I've caused you so much trouble.

I looked at him in the gray light.

His hair stood up on one side, and my mouth had left a mark on his shoulder.

"I'm not sorry," I said.
