Chapter 18: The Rail
Maeve's POV
The Lakeside bridge was grey and empty at dusk.
I stood at the middle of it in Dario's coat with my left hand in a glove and my right hand on the rail.
At the far end, a black sedan sat with its engine running.
Dario was behind the wheel, and I did not look at him.
Stefano had parked at the near end, as he had promised Camille, and then he had left his car and gone into the trees without a word.
He was watching from the trees with a rifle his father kept in the study.
Headlights swept the road.
A black Mercedes pulled up at the near end, and two men in dark suits climbed out and then Camille.
She had a white fur around her shoulders and her hair loose.
She walked up the bridge on her own, humming.
She was twenty feet from me before she saw that I was not Stefano.
She stopped.
I pushed back my hood.
For a moment her face did nothing at all.
Then it filled with joy.
"There you are," Camille said. "I knew it. I told my father you were breathing."
"Hello, Camille."
"Look at you. Skin and bones." She came closer, laughing under her breath. "Where did you hide? A convent? Under the skirts of Dario's boat house? I burned it down looking for you."
"I know. I watched it burn."
"Good."
She stopped an arm's length away and tilted her head, the same way she had on the bridge, a week ago, with her friends' phones in the air.
"Did Stefano send you?"
"Stefano doesn't know where I am."
"Of course he does. He's a bad liar." She smiled. "You know what I did, don't you? That's why you're here. You want to hear me say it."
"Say it."
"All of it?"
"Start with the tea."
Camille laughed again, delighted.
