Chapter 17: Cleared
Sunday was the longest race of the year, and it started without me knowing anything.
Six hundred miles at Charlotte.
Memorial Day weekend, a hundred and fifty thousand people in the stands.
My first time on a pit box at my home track since the party.
The boot lady's women had a whole section in turn one with a bedsheet banner that said EMMY'S GIRLS.
Daddy was up there with them.
They'd adopted him.
At five o'clock, an hour before the green flag, I was on the box going over the fuel numbers one more time.
The little TV monitor in the corner of the box had the pre-race show on with the sound down.
Then the welding cap grabbed my arm.
"Emmy. Look."
On the screen was the Tillery hauler.
In front of it stood a man I'd worked next to for five years.
The head fabricator.
Forties, thick arms, a gray goatee, his Tillery shirt buttoned to the neck like it was church.
The welding cap turned the sound up.
"I built it," the fabricator said to the camera. "The rear mount on the #17 last fall. I built it by myself, at night, on my own. Nobody asked me to."
