Chapter 21: The First Fight
I didn't answer her that night.
At six in the morning I texted the reporter back.
"Not on the phone. Come to the shop in Concord at nine. Bring a camera."
Then I asked the owner for the whole crew at nine.
At nine there were forty-one people on the white floor of the shop, in front of the black #22.
The reporter stood off to one side with a cameraman, and the owner at the back with his arms crossed.
I stood on an upside-down bucket so the back row could see me.
"Y'all have seen the clips," I said. "The confession and the driveway. So here it is, once, on the record."
I didn't look at the camera.
I looked at my crew.
"I didn't build that part, and I didn't tell anybody to."
I held up the hospital log in its freezer bag, so they could see my own handwriting on it.
Nobody moved.
"I don't know what Crews said to that man. I know he never asked me twice."
Somebody in the pit crew snorted.
"A lie cleared my name. Last night the truth made it dirty again. I'd rather have it dirty and true."
