The kitchen at Tern House had fourteen cooks in white jackets, and all of them stopped moving when Maude walked in with her cane.
It was the afternoon before her seventy-eighth birthday.
The flagship sat on the river downtown, with a hundred and twenty seats and a wall of copper pots.
The ceiling was so high it had its own weather.
I had never been inside it.
I'd imagined something colder.
"Who is in charge?" Maude asked.
Fourteen people turned and looked at the tallest man by the pass.
"That's my grandson," she said. "I mean, who is in charge of the gravy?"
A young woman raised her hand, slowly.
"Chef Carberry said."
"Chef Carberry said I could cook for my own party. Move your pot."
The young woman moved her pot.
Ewan stood at the end of the line with a towel on his shoulder.
He had the expression of a man at his own funeral, trying hard to look delighted.
"Gram, we have a menu."
"You have a menu. I have pot roast."
"A hundred and twenty people."
"Then we'd better start the roasts."
