Chapter 16: The Mayor
I did not go to the bakery.
I went to the town hall, because I knew exactly where the mayor kept his dialogue.
Town Hall was a round gingerbread building with a clock that said half past three at every hour.
Inside, a hedgehog in a green sash sat behind a desk the size of a dinner plate, writing in a ledger.
He was the same hedgehog who had walked in front of Mari's parade.
"Good morning, Miss Juno," he said, without looking up.
"How may Honey Hollow be kind to you?"
That was line one.
I had read it a hundred times.
In the test build, the mayor's tree had four branches.
Three of them gave you directions to the bakery, the bridge and the well.
The fourth was greyed out, and QA had flagged it in the tracker as a dead branch with no trigger.
The branch only unlocked if you carried three Kindness Notes, one signed by each of three villagers.
