At noon the whole village stood in the square.
Badgers and mice, rabbits and foxes, the bakers and the washers.
The frog sat on his bucket, and the hedgehog stood on a barrel with his ledger open.
Mari sat on the Quiet Bench with the pink bow around her neck.
A sign on her knees said I AM THINKING ABOUT KINDNESS.
She would not look at me.
Dex stood at the front with his lemon cake, the picture of a good citizen.
"Honey Hollow Town Meeting," the mayor said, and rang his bell.
"Item one."
"The Bear House has a guest who wishes to speak."
I climbed onto the well.
"I'm not going to talk long," I said.
"I'm going to read what you already wrote down."
The hedgehog held up the ledger.
It was twice his size, bound in pink, and every page was thick with tiny tidy lines in pencil.
"Every village has a memory," I said.
"Yours is a ledger."
"Mayor, would you read the first entry for Mr. Lorimer?"
"With pleasure." The mayor cleared his throat.
