"Don't get up," I said, because I could think of nothing else.
"I wouldn't dream of it."
Dex patted the floor beside him.
"Come sit, Juno."
"The Bear will be here in a minute."
"I'm saving you a seat."
The lullaby crept up the cellar stairs.
Somewhere below, Grover was talking to the sleepers in a low, steady voice.
I stayed where I was, ten feet away, with the lantern between us.
"How did you get in?"
"The pantry hinge is an easy fix."
"I've been oiling things for days."
"You're banned from the bridge."
"Yes, I crossed it."
"I felt very bad."
"I'll apologize in the morning."
He smiled.
"The animals were busy, you see."
"They were all watching the square."
"Where's Mari?"
"I think she's asleep."
"I think I heard her."
He tilted his head.
"It's quiet, isn't it?"
"She had a lot to say."
I didn't answer.
"That's all right," Dex said.
"I hear it's hard to talk about the people you've fed."
