Chapter 13: Floor by Floor
Nobody in the boiler room moved.
Augustin's cane tapped the grate again, once.
Enoch put a finger to his lips and stepped under the slats with the pistol low against his leg.
"Good evening, Mr. Lasker," he said, in his front-desk voice. "The pipes run loud at night."
"These pipes breathe, Enoch."
"Then I'll have them looked at in the morning."
"I would rather look tonight."
His voice was so mild he could have been offering tea.
"The Truce gives a guest a search when something of his is taken.
Section nine. You skimmed three clauses to the Table and called it the whole."
"Nothing of yours is missing."
"A book is missing. A laundry girl carried it off, and she has hidden it under your roof."
The cane tapped once more.
"I want the guests woken and every floor opened from the top down, in front of them. With you present, naturally."
The light left the slats, and the cane went away across the iron, tap by tap.
Odile let out her breath. "He can't force this door. It's staff ground."
