Chapter 14: The Shaft
Enoch did not wait to hear what Augustin thought was unfortunate.
He crossed the twelfth-floor landing and took a small brass key from the ring.
Beside the lift doors was a panel I had walked past a hundred times with my cart.
He opened it, and inside sat a single brass lever in a worn slot.
"Battery lever," he said. "It runs the staff car when the power's cut. Up is up, down is down."
"Enoch..."
"Don't let it go, Fenella. Whatever you see."
He wedged a crowbar from the closet into the seam of the landing doors and hauled them apart.
Cold air and the smell of oil came up out of the dark.
Two of Lucan's men started toward us, and I grabbed the lever with both hands.
"Touch me," I said, "and every phone on this floor sees it."
