I ran.
I ran across the lobby, and Odile caught my elbow at the service door.
She looked as if she had been standing there for an hour.
"Dumbwaiter," I said. "In the infirmary."
"I know where it is, love."
"Bring it to the front doors. Now."
She didn't ask why.
She went down the corridor at a speed a woman with a shot shoulder had no business reaching, and I turned back to the lobby.
Through the glass of the revolving door I could see a black car at the curb, with its back door open.
On the pavement stood a dozen people in rain jackets, with cameras on their shoulders and microphones held up.
Forty phones had filmed the shaft, and it was on every screen in Port Calder.
The reporters had come for a story, and Augustin had given them a better one.
