Chapter 23: The Old Man Falls
They carried Lucan off the pavement on a stretcher, handcuffed to the rail, and he was still screaming for his father.
Nobody stopped to look.
The families went back into the Noir in a line, wet and silent, and I went with them.
Enoch walked beside me with his hand not quite touching mine.
In the lobby the old woman sat down in her armchair, under the clock, and struck the arm of it once with her cigarette holder.
"The Table is in session," she said.
"It is nowhere near the first Friday," said one of the brothers.
"It is where I say it is. Sit."
They sat on the lobby sofas and the leather chairs, five of them, in a ragged circle.
Augustin did not sit.
He stood alone in the middle of the marble with his cane in both hands.
"This is my hotel," he said. "I will not be tried in my own lobby."
"It isn't your hotel," Enoch said.
"The deed in that envelope was never signed. I am the owner, Enoch."
