Chapter 15: Subpoena
At eight o'clock Tuesday morning the courtroom was already full.
Leland's lawyer called his first witness before I had finished taking off my coat.
The examiner from the lab wore a gray suit and carried a binder with a gold stamp on it.
He swore the oath and told the room he had twenty years in questioned documents.
"In your opinion, is Exhibit Twelve in the hand of Jonas Thackeray?" the lawyer asked.
"It is, to a high degree of certainty."
"No signs of tracing or forgery?"
"None."
"Your witness."
I stood and left my notes on the table.
"Sir, who engaged you?"
"The petitioner's counsel."
"Who owns your laboratory?"
He shifted.
"I am a principal."
"Is there another principal?"
"There is a majority holder."
"His name, please."
The examiner's eyes went to the left table.
"It is a family trust," he said.
