Security walked us to the lobby.

We passed the desk where Jonas had signed in every morning for nine years.

Then they walked us out through the revolving door.

Someone had already taken his name off the wall plate inside the elevator.

I saw it as the doors closed.

Neither of us spoke in the car.

I gave the driver my mother's address because I could not think of anywhere else I wanted to be.

The bakery was dark at the front, with plywood over the window and the Still open sign turned to Closed.

I let us in through the side door with my old key.

The back kitchen was warm.

Rosanna had gone up to bed an hour before.

She had left the big ovens ticking as they cooled and a loaf of bread on the steel table under a dish towel.

I stood in the middle of the floor with my coat still on.

I was shaking, and not from cold.
