Chapter 13: Dawn in the Yard

He did not move for one heartbeat of mine.

His eyes went to the pulse in my throat, and I watched the fear in his face lose to the hunger.

I got my hand around the back of his shaved head and pulled his mouth down onto my neck.

His teeth went in fast and clean.

There was a bright pinch, and then heat came pouring out of the bite and down through my chest, my stomach, my thighs.

My knees buckled and he held me up with one arm.

I made a sound I would not have made in front of the House.

He drank in long, hard pulls, and with each one I felt the cold go out of his hands.

The gash on his forearm began to knit.

I watched it close, grey edge to grey edge, then pink, then gone.

He took three swallows more than he had in my bed, and then he tore his mouth away and shook.

"Enough," he said, hoarse. "That's enough."

"It isn't."

"Hanne, I could not stop if I took more."

Below us, a boot hit the copper.

"Then stop later," I said. "Run now."

He licked the bite closed with one slow stroke of his tongue, and I felt it all the way down my spine.

He put me over his shoulder again, and I did not argue.

We dropped off the porch roof into the garden and crossed the lawn in the dark.

I had the truck keys out before we reached the door.

I drove down Skyline with the lights off.
