Chapter 14: The Van Man
"That's a van, bug," I said.
"I can see it's a van. Who's sleeping in it?"
He had a way of asking that made lying feel like stealing from a bank.
Berit came around the front of her truck with a thermos in one hand and her framing hammer on her belt.
She looked at the van.
She looked at the padlock.
She looked at my neck, which I had not zipped high enough.
"Eero," she said, "go wash your hands at the spigot. You've got syrup to your elbows."
"I didn't eat syrup."
"Then it's from somewhere else. Go."
He went, dragging his feet, and watched us over his shoulder the whole way.
"Is that him," Berit said, very low.
"Yes."
"Is he hurt?"
"He was. He's better."
"Is anyone coming for him?"
"Everyone is coming for him."
She nodded slowly.
She unscrewed the thermos and poured me a cup of coffee, and her hand was perfectly steady.
"Drink that," she said. "You look like you fell off a building."
"I did that last week."
"Then you look like you fell off two."
Eero came back with wet sleeves and stopped at the van.
