Chapter 15: Berit Knew

Berit told it fast, standing at the tailgate, with her eyes on my son and not on me.

Four years ago, at two in the morning, Torsten Ruud had knocked on her back door with snow on his shoulders.

He asked for one thing.

He asked her to keep watch over a roofer and a baby and to never say why.

"I asked him what I'd tell you if you asked," Berit said. "He said to tell you nothing, because you wouldn't remember anyone asking."

"And I never asked."

"No. You were too busy being brave."

Her voice cracked.

"There's more. You won't like it."

"Say it."

"Two weeks ago, a man in a camel coat came to the shop. He drank my tea. He was very kind."

Her fingers closed on the thermos lid.

"He asked who I'd send up a roof in a storm if I had to choose one person. I said my best."

I put my cup down on the tailgate.

"You told him it was me."

"I told him it was you."

"The Lundgren job."

"I sent you up there knowing he'd asked," she said. "I didn't know why. I told myself I didn't."

I could not speak.

Eero was hopping from foot to foot at the spigot, hugging his pad to his chest.

"Time for school," Berit said. "I'll take him. I'll be back in forty minutes."
