Chapter 21: The Seat
Torsten looked at the hall on its knees.
He looked at the ring in the elder's hand, and he looked at me.
"I said one minute," he said.
He walked up onto the low platform and took the ring from her palm.
It was heavy and old, with a stone the color of the lake.
He did not put it on.
He held it up in his scarred hand so that every vampire in the hall could see it.
"I take the seat," he said. "This is my minute."
His voice was not loud.
The whole room leaned toward it anyway.
"First. The House has no master. It has a keeper of its law, and she is the oldest among us. I name her regent, and I will not hear her refused."
Nobody refused.
The elder lowered her head by an inch.
"Second. The House will no longer hush a human who learns what we are, and it will no longer kill one."
A sound went through the walls.
"Any human who has been hushed gets back what was taken, if she wants it, on the day she asks."
