The host's smile stayed where it was, but her eyes did not.
"A recorder," she said.
"For a gossip site," Corin said. "It paid her eight thousand dollars."
In his kitchen I put my palm flat on the steel counter, because the floor had tilted.
He had said it first.
He had said it in the flattest voice in America, to four million people, before the site could.
"Mr. Wray," the host said, and her voice went tight. "You're telling our viewers the woman in the photograph spied on you."
"I'm telling them she wore it for three minutes and forty seconds."
"Which is spying."
"She turned it off at three-forty. I watched the light go out."
The host blinked at him.
"You watched it."
"I did," Corin said. "And I'm the one who opened the door."
The studio audience made a sound.
"So you set a trap," the host said.
"I told her the truest thing I had, to see what she'd do."
He looked straight into the lens.
