Chapter 15: Second Gate
"Page three," the editor said, tapping the glass desk with one nail. "The yellow tab."
"I read it."
"Then you read the part about disparagement."
She smiled at the staff on the couches, who were all watching her now.
"You've just called my site a thief on live television. That's two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, Hedy."
"I don't have two hundred and fifty dollars."
"Then you should have kept your mouth closed, as the contract suggested."
She turned back toward the glass elevator.
I left the eight thousand dollars exactly where it lay on the desk.
"It's yours whether you count it or not," I said.
Wills took my elbow, and we walked out under the pink neon.
On the sidewalk he said, "Hed, she can't actually get that from you."
"I don't know," I said.
On Friday the director played the footage on Stage 4.
She did it in front of the people who would have to live with it.
The set was the lamp room of the lighthouse, built up on scaffolding.
A great brass lens stood in the middle, and a monitor had been wheeled in under it.
Forty crew members sat on apple boxes and cable cases, and Marj and I stood at the back by the fire door.
