Chapter 17: The Charity Dinner
"Take the twenty," I typed back to the photographer. "Say yes. Leave your phone recording in your pocket."
"It's a terrible plan," Marj said, chewing. "At a gala, a terrible plan is just a speech with a schedule."
The Eastlake Arts Dinner was held in the ballroom of a hotel on Wilshire.
There were forty tables under chandeliers.
I wore Marj's emerald dress from a 1998 awards night.
It had pockets, and she had taken in the waist herself with a stapler.
I had a pencil in my curls.
It was a different pencil from the one I'd lost on the roof, and I felt strongly that this mattered.
Corin walked in beside me in a black suit, with his hand a careful inch from my back.
He did not take my arm, because I had asked him not to.
"If you hold on to me," I had said in the truck, "they'll write that you carried me in."
"I'd carry you in."
"I know. That's why you're not allowed."
The room turned as we crossed it.
Two hundred phones came up like a field of small mirrors.
A man at table nine said "That's her" in the voice of someone naming a landmark.
I kept my chin level and my eyes on the centerpieces.
