Chapter 23: Casting Call
Twelve hundred heads turned to look at me.
"I read the pages first," I said, from my seat, loudly enough to carry. "All of them. I don't cast anything I haven't read."
The director put her hand over her mouth, and the whole palace laughed.
On Monday morning I climbed the stairs to Fawcett Casting, and there was nobody on them.
No cameras, no microphones, no one shouting my price.
The stairwell smelled of pressing steam, the way it always had.
The door at the top had been lettered in gold paint, still tacky, with a smear of gum on the brush lying on the sill.
It said FAWCETT & DEHAVEN CASTING.
I stood and looked at it for a long time.
"Don't cry on the paint," said Marj Fawcett, from inside.
I cried on the paint.
She came out and wiped my face with her cardigan sleeve, which smelled of nicotine gum and cat.
"I'm not being kind," she said. "You're costing me fourteen months. I want the name on the door to make it back."
Inside, the two rooms were full.
