Chapter 24: The Table for Three
On Sunday at seven, the glass kitchen had a table in it.
It was a long oak table that did not belong there, set squarely where the empty floor had been.
Three chairs stood at it, and three plates, and a candle in a jar.
"There are only three chairs," I said.
"I only know three people," said Corin.
"You know a lot more than three."
"I know three I'd cook for."
He stood at the stove in an apron that said KISS THE COOK, which Wills had given him as a joke at the office.
He wore it.
The kitchen smelled of burnt garlic.
"What are we eating?" I asked.
"Pasta."
"What's the smoke?"
"The pasta."
I laughed so hard I had to hold on to the back of a chair.
Wills arrived at a quarter past with a bottle of grape soda and a loaf of bread from the dorm.
He put them on the table and stood looking at the whole thing with his hands on his hips.
"Dude," he said. "It's a real table."
"I'm told that's what they're called."
"You bought a table for us."
"I bought a table for dinner," Corin said, and turned his back to hide his ears, which had gone red.
We ate the pasta.
It was not good.
It was, in fact, a crime against the noodle.
Wills ate two helpings and said it was the best thing he'd ever tasted, which was how I knew he meant it.
