Chapter 16: Nothing of Yours

The cameras along the back wall swung from the screen to him.

He liked that.

He turned slowly, so every table could see the page.

"My daughter came to me a month ago," he said, "and put a price on her own sister's fiancé!"

He shook the copy so it rattled.

"Here it is. In her own handwriting. She wrote it on a menu at my breakfast table and made me sign it. One billion dollars, and she leaves the country by July 11."

A murmur went through the room.

At table nine somebody laughed.

"So before you believe a word she says about forgery," my father said, "ask yourselves what kind of woman sells her own wedding."

He held the microphone out to me, smiling.

Go on, the smile said.

I took it.

"He's right," I said. "I wrote that. I asked him for a billion dollars, and he said yes in about five minutes."

The murmur got louder.

"Ask him where he was getting it."

My father's smile slipped a little.

"Fairbairn Hotels is broke," I said. "Everybody on its board knows that. They're sitting right there."

Every head turned to the second row of tables.

Two of the men there found something interesting in their wine.

"So where does a broke man find a billion dollars in four weeks?" I asked. "On Saturday, Kirsten marries Wyeth."
