Chapter 6: One Bed

The guest wing had one warded room, and it had one bed.

"It's the only room the Lycan guard will sleep outside of," Emmett said, from the doorway.

"Something to do with the old wards on the east side. I did say."

"You didn't say there was one bed."

"I said there was a ward. I'm not responsible for the furniture."

He backed out and shut the door.

I stood in the middle of the carpet with my bag in my hand.

It was the room I had once been told would be mine and Dane's, on our wedding night.

I had never slept in it.

Now the quilt and the lamp were new, and somebody had put a vase of daisies on the dresser.

Soren stood by the window with his back to me.

"I'll take the sofa," he said.

"It's four feet long."

"Then I'll take the floor."

"You're six foot four."

"I've slept on worse."

"You're a prince."

"Yes," Soren said, with feeling. "That's why I've slept on worse."

I laughed.

It escaped before I could stop it, a short, surprised sound, and Soren turned his head and looked at me.

It was the first time I had seen him smile. It was crooked and quick, and it was gone almost at once.

"Bed," I said. "You take the left, I take the right. A pillow between us."

"A pillow."

"A wall of pillows."

"Understood."

We built it together, out of four pillows and a folded blanket, without speaking.
