Chapter 5: Under One Roof

"She drew you," I told Corwin that night, in the kitchen, with the lights off.

I had come down for water at midnight and found him already there.

He was sitting on the counter in a black T-shirt, with a glass of whiskey he wasn't drinking.

"I saw," he said. "Sherman still has it."

"He knows."

"He suspects. It isn't the same."

"It is when he's the one deciding what happens to her."

I filled a glass at the tap with my hands shaking from the long day.

I had stitched a wolf's thigh and slept two hours in six.

I had not let myself think that the man who hunted me for six years was down the hall.

"Why did you run?" he said.

I laughed, short and sharp.

"Excuse me?"

"Six weeks after that night, you were gone, and my father was dead by morning."

"Your father died."

"I know he died."

"I thought I'd done it!"

It came out louder than I wanted, and we both froze and listened for the stairs.

When nothing moved, I dropped my voice.

"I was bleeding through two pairs of jeans in your pantry," I said.

"I didn't know why. The cabinet was open, and I did the only thing I could think of."

"You didn't know it was his."

"I found out at breakfast. A woman in the kitchen was crying about the last dose being gone. That's when I understood."

Corwin set the glass down on the counter.

"So you ran from a murder," he said slowly. "Not from me."

"I ran from both."

"And you didn't tell me about her because of the murder."

"I didn't tell you about her because you'd have put me in front of a council and her in a cage."
