Chapter 14: Who Called First
Stewart's POV
I was at the clinic in Pittsburgh when the doors opened at eight.
I hadn't slept.
The deputy had let Beth go from the river road at dusk with a warning about taking a child out of daycare.
She was staying at the motel on Route 8, the same one where Geneva had slept the first night.
Junie was at the Cassidys', with Frank on the porch like a guard.
I had left her there and driven two hours without the radio.
The woman at the front desk had a plant on her counter and a name tag I didn't read.
"I'm Stewart Prescott," I said. "I authorized a transfer here two and a half years ago. I need to see my file."
She typed, and her face changed a little.
"Mr. Prescott. I remember you."
"Then you know why I'm here."
"I'll get the coordinator."
The coordinator took me back to a small office with a box of tissues on the desk, and I understood that the tissues were for me.
She was a gray-haired woman in a cardigan, and she opened the folder and turned it to face me.
"Before you ask," she said, "I'm allowed to show you this because you're the other signer."
"Show me who called first."
She was quiet a moment.
Then she put one finger on a line in the intake log.
The date was nine days after the memorial service.
The caller was listed as "E. Cassidy, sister of patient."
"She wanted to know what a family member could authorize if the patient was deceased," the coordinator said. "I told her it would have to be the spouse or next of kin on the consent. She asked who that was."
