Chapter 16: Badge

The board met in a conference room on the fourth floor, around a table with a water pitcher in the middle.

I walked in on Thursday morning with my father beside me, carrying a gray shoebox under one arm.

Giles was already at the foot of the table in a pressed shirt, with his hands flat in front of him.

Seven people sat along the sides.

At the head was the board chair, a heavy man with a gray mustache, and at his left elbow, with a folder open and a lanyard around her neck, sat Beth.

She looked up and didn't look surprised.

"Ms. Cassidy," the chair said. "This is a closed session."

"She's the patient named in the complaint," my father said. "She gets to be in the room."

The chair glanced at Beth, and Beth gave a small nod.

We sat on the two empty chairs by the door.

"Let's begin," the chair said. "The complaint, filed by our patient services manager, states that Dr. Kemp entered a personal relationship with a current patient, in violation of this hospital's policy."

"That's correct," Beth said, in her warm, careful voice. "I want to say I take no pleasure in this. I care about this hospital. I've watched a patient who was vulnerable be exploited by a physician."

I felt my father shift in his seat.

"Dr. Kemp," the chair said. "Do you dispute it?"

"I dispute the word exploited," Giles said. "I'll answer anything else."

"Did you touch Ms. Cassidy while she was your patient?"

"No."

"Did you form a romantic attachment to her?"

"Yes," Giles said, without hesitating. "I told her on the roof that I would not touch her as long as I was her doctor. On Tuesday morning at eight o'clock I transferred her case to another physician. The transfer is in the chart with the time on it."
