Chapter 19: The Log

Daniel's POV

The biomedical tech who serviced the anesthesia machines had a desk in the basement, between a pile of broken infusion pumps and a space heater.

I had known him eight years.

I had never once asked him for a favor.

"The machine in Room Four," I said. "I need what it recorded the morning Kit Clendenin died. Alarms and silences. Everything with a login on it."

He looked at me over his glasses for a long moment.

"The chief's office said that file was sealed."

"The chief's office can seal what's on a server. This is on the machine."

He sighed, and typed, and the printer in the corner groaned.

The page came out warm.

I read it standing up.

There were seven lines between 6:02 and 6:19 in the morning, one for every time the monitor had screamed that a girl's blood pressure was falling.

Beside each line was a short code, and the same code every time.

ESTRAND.

"I never gave you this," the tech said.

"I know."

"If it goes bad, I'm the one who had it in a drawer for a month."

"If it goes bad," I said, "I'm the one who asked for it."

I folded the page into a manila envelope and put it inside my coat against my ribs.

In the locker room I stood at my own locker and did something I had not done in five years.

I lifted the cord over my head.

The ring slid down the loop into my palm.

It was warm and worn thin on one side.

I put it in my pocket.

I walked out through the staff garage, and on level three, in the reserved space with the stenciled name on the pillar, Camilla was leaning against her black Audi.

She wore her navy fleece.
