Chapter 11: Eleven

I didn't sleep after he left.

I sat on the kitchen floor with my phone and Danny's stick figure over my head, drafting the text half a dozen times.

Then I took a breath and sent it.

"Drinks Friday, 9pm, the bar under the 7 train at 46th St. Cupids only. Not a Golden Hour thing. Come alone. Delete this."

Ten cupids got it.

By morning, nobody had answered.

By Friday, the woman I'd trained wrote back: "Yes."

The bar was called nothing. It had a neon shamrock with half the tubes dead and a pool table with a dip in it.

The train went over every four minutes and the bottles shook on the shelves.

Jody wore a baseball cap and sunglasses, at night, indoors.

"You look like a celebrity in rehab," I said.

"I'm a dead woman in a bar, Clary. Let me have my look."

Hades had wanted to come.

I'd let him come as far as the sidewalk.

"You'll freeze the beer," I'd said. "And you're scary."

"I'm not scary."

"You made a baby stop crying by walking into a room."

He'd stayed outside under the train tracks, leaning on a lamppost, in his dark suit.

At nine o'clock, nobody came.

At nine-twenty, six cupids came in together.

Two more came at ten to ten.

Eight.

Eight out of ten.

I bought them all beers and they all held them and nobody drank.

They looked at Jody.

Jody took off the sunglasses.

The woman I'd trained put her hand over her mouth.

"They said you were at the Isles," somebody said.

"I was," Jody said. "I was asleep in a white bed next to a guy who used to do the office Secret Santa. He's eighty now. He was forty-one last Christmas."
